LIBBY
Portland, Oregon, Spring — I have come to a local nursing home in search of unique characters, when I find Libby. And she is a total character. She is tickled pink that I want to take her picture, and it shows in the look on her face. She strikes that pose without me saying a word, and it couldn't be better. I love that her body language matches the flowers on her wallpaper. Days later I discover her last name is Leben. I tell her, “I used to know someone in high school in the 60's in Kansas named Teena Leben. ” She does not miss a step and says in a thick Yiddish accent, “that’s my granddaughter!” Two degrees of separation... it’s definitely a small planet we all inhabit.
