THE THREE MUSES

Jaisalmer, India — It is noon and 95 degrees on the dusty streets of this small Rajasthani town, very close to the Pakistan border.  Three women wrapped in their glowing pink, orange and yellow saris appear almost mirage like.  I soon realize they are street repair workers; their job is to carry loads of gravel back and forth all day long.  I was struck by the contrast between the dirty, gritty work they are doing and the beauty of their posture, dress, and demeanor.  This was rural India in the late 90s; unexpected beauty in the midst of grinding poverty.
